Bulletproof Coffee

Morning routines are very important, it sets up your intention for the day! If my morning is a mess then the rest of my day may follow it. One thing I always look forward to is my cup of coffee. Since incorporating bulletproof coffee into my mornings I have noticed a few changes worth mentioning. For starters, my energy levels stay up more so throughout the morning and afternoon than when I only had a cup of regular coffee. My cravings for sweets declined a little (always a bonus), and it helps my body burn fat!

What is Bulletproof coffee?

Bulletproof coffee starts with high quality, mold-free coffee.

Then 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of Brain Octane Oil, which is essentially MCT oil.

Then 1 tablespoon of grass-fed, unsalted butter or grass-fed ghee (my preference).

That is essentially the main recipe for bulletproof, but I like to add a teaspoon of honey, collagen, a sprinkle of cinnamon and any adaptogen of choice. Then, blend!

 

Technically, bulletproof should replace your breakfast, but I personally prefer to eat my breakfast after my morning workout, if I am feeling hungry. I notice I workout a lot harder when I drink bulletproof coffee before my workouts than when I don't.

High-quality coffee- Coffee does indeed have many health benefits. It lowers risk of Alzheimer's disease, protects against Parkinson’s disease, has a ton of antioxidants and bioflavonoids, and has nutrients such as potassium and B vitamins. If you like to workout in the morning, the caffeine in coffee can boost your endurance and speed up your metabolism. I use my Nespresso pods, but Hannah prefers her french press.

 

Ghee

Grass-fed butter or Ghee- Do not be afraid of butter, it is a healthy fat and makes your coffee super creamy. Some of the nutrients that can be found in butter are CLA, omega-3 fatty acids, and fat-soluble vitamins D, A, K, and E.  It helps sustain your energy until lunchtime. Butter also contains short-chain fatty acids that helps to decrease inflammation and help with digestion. I prefer to use ghee because it is clarified butter, although it still is dairy, the milk solids are separated.

 

MCT oil

MCT Oil- MCT’s are medium-chain triglycerides derived from coconut oil. Coconut oil can be used in your bulletproof, but concentrated MCT oil will be more beneficial. MCT oil is converted directly into energy in the form of ketones. Therefore, it is a fat burner, helping you lose weight and boost your metabolic rate. It is extremely fueling for your brain, allowing your brain to access energy instantly.

Make sure your MCT oil is 100% coconut sourced and NOT from palm oil.

 

Collagen

Collagen- We naturally have collagen in our bodies, but as we grow older our collagen production depletes. So if adding collagen to your diet can help you have fewer wrinkles as you grow older then sign me up! Since adding collagen to my routine my hair and nails grow super fast. There are different types of collagen (blog post coming soon), but all of them have basically the same benefits: helps your hair, skin, nails, heal your gut lining, and help joint function. One cup of bulletproof coffee can raise your blood ketone levels in which help suppress your appetite. This drink was technically made for those in a ketogenic diet (I personally don't find that diet healthy), but I have seen the benefits from drinking it daily. I also like to add adaptogens such as maca powder or medicinal mushrooms, such as Reishi or ashwanaganda.
